What Is the Procedure for Dental Implants?

Installing dental implants is a two-part procedure that involves creating a bone graft if bone loss has occurred over the years to ensure that the implant is properly fitted. Anesthesia will be provided before the procedure. After the surgery is completed, a temporary tooth replacement may be provided as the implant fuses to the bone that is present. This can take several months to complete.

Dental Crown or Prosthetic Placement: After the abutment is in place, a custom-made dental crown or prosthetic tooth is attached to the abutment. The replacement tooth is designed to match the shape and color of your natural teeth for a seamless appearance.

Implant-Supported Bridges: Dental implants can also be used to support dental bridges when multiple adjacent teeth are missing. Implant-supported bridges are an alternative to traditional dental bridges that rely on adjacent teeth for support.

All-on-4 or All-on-6: These are procedures designed for patients who have lost most or all of their teeth. All-on-4 involves placing four dental implants in strategic positions in the jaw to support a full arch of prosthetic teeth. Similarly, All-on-6 uses six implants for added stability.

Mini Dental Implants: These are smaller versions of traditional dental implants and are used in cases where there is insufficient bone or when a less invasive procedure is desired.

Sinus Lift or Bone Grafting: Some patients may require additional procedures, such as a sinus lift or bone grafting, to augment the bone in the jaw before dental implant placement. This ensures there is enough bone density to support the implant securely.

Dental implants are custom-made structures that replace missing teeth. They are fixed to the jawbone by a dental surgeon with a screw-like device. They function like natural teeth.

Generally, individuals who have good oral health, adequate bone density in the jaw, and healthy gums are suitable candidates for dental implants. However, each case is unique, and a thorough evaluation by a dentist or oral surgeon is necessary to determine suitability.

Dental implants offer many advantages like:
Enhanced appearance and natural feel: Implants look and feel like your own teeth.
Improved speech: Implants allow the person to speak clearly, unlike dentures which can cause slurring.
Better oral health: Implants don’t require altering adjacent teeth, as bridges do, promoting long-term oral health.
Supports dentures and preventing jawbone from shrinking due to bone loss.
Durability: Dental Implant is a long-term solution if properly cared for.

The dental implant procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia, ensuring you feel little to no discomfort during the surgery. After the procedure, some patients may experience mild soreness or discomfort, which can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medication.
